Hear Elton John singing ‘Come Back Baby’, a 1965 single, with Bluesology here:
Bluesology are chiefly remembered today as the first band to feature Elton John - then known as Reg Dwight - who played keyboards with them from the tender age of 14. Originally named the Corvettes, they formed part of the new wave of British blues bands of the early Sixties. As their reputation grew, they backed visiting American acts such as the Drifters, Doris Troy and Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles, as well as playing their own shows, and were later recruited as Long John Baldry’s backing band after the Hoochie Coochie Men broke up. In 1966, Elton left the line-up, met up with lyricist Bernie Taupin - and the rest is history. When Baldry changed his musical style from R’n’B to pop, he split with Bluesology, but the band continued with guitarist Stuart Brown as their frontman.
However, Bluesology’s influence continues to live on. When Reg Dwight changed his name, he reputedly took the ‘Elton’ from Bluesology’s saxophonist Elton Dean and the ‘John’ from Long John Baldry. (His middle name ‘Hercules’ was inspired by the horse in ‘Steptoe and Son’!)
