David Bowie and the Lower Third

Listen to David Bowie and the Lower Third performing ‘Can’t Help Thinking About Me’ here:

Now an international star, David Bowie appeared at the Marquee in the early days of his career. Originally working under his real name of David (or Davy) Jones, in the early Sixties, he performed with a number of bands, including, in 1965, the Lower Third, a group who’d moved to London from Margate. A mod band, Davy Jones and the Lower Third were heavily influenced by the Who and the Kinks and shared the same producer, Shel Talmy, who worked on their first single for Pye Records, ‘You’ve Got a Habit of Leaving’, in 1965. By the time they came to record their second, ‘Can’t Help Thinking About Me’, in 1966, David had changed his surname to ‘Bowie’, to prevent confusion with Monkees’ singer Davy Jones, but the Lower Third left him shortly after the single’s release in a dispute over money. Bowie continued undeterred as a solo artist and finally found success with his single, ‘Space Oddity’, released in 1969.

If you check out the EMI photo’s of us, all the clobber we are wearing was bought in Carnaby Street-I think the same day of the session (you can see the creases in the new shirts straight off the shelf).
    Phil Lancaster (Lower Third).
