Lulu and the Luvvers

Watch Lulu performing ‘Shout’ on ‘Ready Steady Go!’ in 1965:

Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Scotland in 1948, Lulu joined a local group, the Gleneagles, and started performing gigs around Glasgow and Edinburgh at the age of 14. She was quickly discovered by her long-time manager Marion Massey who changed the name of the act to Lulu and the Luvvers, moved them down to London and signed them to Decca. They had a Top 10 in 1964 with their first single, ‘Shout’, an old Isley Brothers hit which Lulu had first heard sung by Alex Harvey some months before. Their whirlwind success led to numerous recording sessions, promotional appearances and live shows over the next couple of years, including a gig at the Marquee in 1965. Lulu split from the Luvvers in 1966 and has enjoyed a lengthy career in the entertainment industry, as a popular singer, actress and songwriter.
