Sixties Happenings - Jazz In June

London’s BFI Southbank celebrates the 50th anniversary of the legendary Ronnie Scott’s jazz club with its Jazz In June programme which features both free and ticketed events. Amongst the attractions on offer are live performances courtesy of Ronnie Scott’s musicians and the highlight of the season will be a Jazz Weekender from 12-14th June, with a recreation of a Sixties Jazz Scene party on Saturday 13th. Throughout the month, there will be screenings of documentaries like ‘Jazz Britannia’ which relates the history of jazz in the UK, rarely seen archive performances by classic artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, and jazz-related films including three Joseph Losey movies scored by Sir John Dankworth CBE - ‘The Criminal’, ‘The Servant’ and ‘Accident’ - with the composer taking part in a Q&A following the last. A full programme is available to view online at www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/.

I was a member of Ronnies. Just back from New York in 1985 I told Ronnie that I had been to the BLUE NOTE in New York two days earlier and how I had paid to come in to the club more than half way through the first set. When the set was finished a young woman had come to my table and asked for another 50 dollars for the two of us for the second set. I had waited years from my teens to sit and pay homage in the Blue Note where so many great records had been made.
‘Please don’t ever do that Ronnie” I said to him,
“Listen boy, I always said this was the best Jazz Club in the world”

And it was. I miss Ronnie Scott.
