There were two sorts of clubs: the rock clubs that the public went to and the night-clubs that all the stars went to. The nice thing was the bands all lived in London then - they would have moved down from Liverpool or Manchester or Cardiff or Newcastle. Usually in the evenings, the last thing they wanted to do was play a gig - they wanted to get that over with and then go to a club and party!
The kings of party hosts were the Animals and they would hold court in quite a small club called The Kilt in Greek Street. There would be a routine; you’d start in one bar like The Kilt and then you’d go to the Cromwellian or Scotch of St James and later on, the Speakeasy. These clubs were great, because they had music too - but they had the greatest music! I remember going to the Speak one day and seeing Sam and Dave, and Booker T and the MG’s.
The Scotch of St James was incredibly small with a tiny disco downstairs and I remember sitting there one night with the Beatles at one table and the Stones at another, and Brian Jones was being led around the club by someone on a leash, because he had this bondage thing going on! If you were in with the In Crowd, you might be invited to the top table, where the Beatles sat. If you weren’t quite so in, you’d be with the Stones!
An awful lot of drinking went on and in the Cromwellian, there was this drinking club called SLAGS - the Society of Looning Alcoholic Guitarists! The chief members were Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Andy Summers of the Police - well, he was in Zoot Money’s band in those days. They would drink bottles of Mateus Rose, which was a new drink to us then! So then the drummers - people like Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker and Keith Moon - formed a rival group called TURDS - the Thinking Union of Rolling Drummers! They’d both have tables at the Cromwellian and shout abuse at each other. It was just one big party.
Did you visit clubs like The Kilt and the Cromwellian in the Sixties? Who did you see there?
